Beaten by 21+ Points: How Rugby Union Sides Fare the Next Week

A heavy beating dents a club side's next result, but by less than the scoreline suggests. Venue, the size of the hiding and the competition decide most of it.

Beaten by 21+ Points: How Rugby Union Sides Fare the Next Week
Starting state

When a rugby union club side has just lost by 21 points or more, how often does it win, scrape a losing bonus or get hammered again in its next match?

  1. A44.0%next-match win share after a 21+ point defeat
  2. B2.27fair odds for that win
  3. C17.9%beaten by 21+ again next time
  4. D936heavy defeats followed up

A 21-point loss looks brutal on the scoreboard, and the instinct is to oppose that side the following week. I wanted to know whether that instinct holds up. Across 936 heavy defeats followed into the next club match, I looked at how often the beaten side won, scraped within seven or got thumped again.

The headline is steadier than I expected. Sides coming off a 21+ point defeat won 44.0% of their next matches, a fair price of 2.27, against 49.3% for all club sides. That is a dent, not a collapse, and this study feeds directly into the scenario work behind my rugby union betting tips page.

Branch AHeavy losers still win their next match often

This chart splits the next match into four branches: win, draw, narrow loss by 1-7, and loss by 8 or more. Across any 21+ defeat, the split was 44.0% won, 1.4% drawn, 15.7% lost by 1-7 and 38.9% lost by 8 or more. The win share sits 5.3 percentage points below the all-sides figure, with a 95% range of ยฑ3.2 points either way.

The size of the hiding matters, but only at the extreme. Sides beaten by 21-30 won 45.5% of 505 next matches and those beaten by 31-40 won 44.7% of 273. Only after a 41-or-more defeat did the win share drop clearly, to 38.0% of 158, with 44.9% losing by 8 or more.

My read is that a 21 to 40 point loss tells you surprisingly little on its own. A forty-point thrashing is different. That usually means a pack that was beaten at the set piece and at the breakdown, and those problems do not mend in seven days.

Branch BThe repeat hammering is the real risk

The handicap bettor's question is whether the side gets hammered again rather than whether it wins. Overall, 17.9% of sides coming off a 21+ point defeat lost by 21 or more again, against 13.9% of all sides. That is only slightly more often for the middle band, but the gap widens as the original margin grows.

After a 21-30 defeat, 14.1% were beaten by 21 or more again, close to the baseline. After 31-40 that rose to 21.6%, and after a 41+ defeat it was 24.1%, roughly one side in four.

This is where I would spend attention on handicaps. A side shipping forty-plus often has injuries, a broken lineout or a rotated squad, and big lines against them can still be live.

Branch CVenue decides most of the bounce-back

Splitting by where the next match is played changes the picture sharply. At home, sides off a heavy defeat won 56.8% of 585 matches, against 65.5% for all home sides. Away, they won 22.8% of 351, against 33.0% for all away sides.

Both gaps point the same way, but the away figure is the stark one. A battered side travelling the following week won fewer than a quarter of the time.

Branch DFrance bounces back, the NPC struggles

The competition table compares the actual win share with a results-only rating model's pre-match chance; the gap column uses draws counted as half. Pro D2 sides won 54.3% of 129 next matches and Top 14 sides 51.8%, both comfortably above the model chance, at gaps of +4.1 and +4.9. French club rugby's home strength, and its habit of squad rotation on tough away trips, probably explains much of that.

The NPC sits at the other end: 30.6% won from 62 cases, against a model chance of 41.6%, a gap of โˆ’11.0. The Premiership, URC, Super Rugby Pacific and URBA Top 14 all sit near the model, with gaps between โˆ’0.5 and +2.0.

Model chance and gap use win rate with draws counted as half.

Overall the model gave these sides 43.9% and they won 44.7% with draws counted as half, so the model already captures most of what a heavy defeat means. The main caveat is that these are final scores only, with no prices: a heavy loss is often against a far stronger side, and the next opponent matters more than last week's margin. The NPC sample is also small, so I treat that gap as a flag rather than a rule.

If this happensโ€ฆ

IF 1
Check the venue first

Off a 21+ defeat, home sides won 56.8% and away sides only 22.8%. Weight the next venue ahead of last week's margin.

IF 2
Respect the forty-point hiding

After a 41+ defeat, 24.1% lost by 21 or more again. Big handicaps against those sides deserve a serious look.

IF 3
Back French rebounds carefully

Pro D2 sides won 54.3% and Top 14 sides 51.8% after a heavy loss, both above model chance. Elsewhere the model was close, so the scoreline alone gives no edge.
