NFL Teams That Start 0-3: How Often Do They Make the Playoffs?
An 0-3 start in the NFL is close to a season verdict. The rest of the schedule against the spread tells a different and more useful story.

If an NFL team starts 0-3 (or 3-0), how often does it make the playoffs, where does its record finish, and does it cover for the rest of the season?
- A1.6%0-3 starts that made the playoffs (2 of 129)
- B72.9%3-0 starts that made the playoffs
- C87.6%0-3 teams that finished with a losing record
- D50.8%0-3 teams: cover rate from game 4 on
Every September someone tells me an 0-3 team is too good to stay down. I wanted the real record behind that claim, so this study follows every NFL regular season from 1999 to 2025, 6,967 games, and tracks what happens after three games. The headline is brutal: 2 of 129 teams that started 0-3 reached the playoffs, or 1.6%.
The bettor's angle sits further down the page. Those same teams covered 50.8% of their games from week four onwards, while the 3-0 sides covered only 48.2%. This study sits behind the weekly reads on my American football tips page, and it is the reason I treat a bad start as a futures question and a good start as a pricing question.
Branch AThree games already separate contenders from the rest
This chart sorts every team by its record after three games and shows how many played at least one playoff game. A 3-0 start led to the playoffs 72.9% of the time, which is 94 of 129 teams. At 2-1 the rate was 54.8%, and at 1-2 it fell to 25.5%.
Then the bar almost disappears. At 0-3 the rate is 1.6%, with a range of ±2.1 points either side because the group is small.
Share of team-seasons that played at least one playoff game that season.
View the data: made the playoffs, by record after three games
| Team-seasons 1999-2025; teams with a tie in the first three games left out | |
|---|---|
| 3-0 (129 teams) | 72.9% |
| 2-1 (303 teams) | 54.8% |
| 1-2 (290 teams) | 25.5% |
| 0-3 (129 teams) | 1.6% |
What I take from it is that each loss across those first three weeks costs far more than a third of a season. The gap between 1-2 and 0-3 is wider than any other step on the chart, so the third loss is the one that closes the door.
Branch BWinless teams fade fast while unbeaten ones keep climbing
Here the two extremes are tracked week by week. After one game, 0-1 teams still made the playoffs 25.3% of the time against 53.3% for 1-0 teams, so week one matters but it is not decisive. After two games the 0-2 rate dropped to 11.0% while 2-0 teams rose to 61.8%.
From there the lines separate quickly. No 0-4 team in the sample made the playoffs, 0 of 81, while 4-0 teams got there 84.9% of the time, 5-0 teams 90.2% and 6-0 teams 94.1%.
Sample shrinks with each week: 427/428, 227/225, 129/129, 81/73, 48/51, 32/34 teams (0-N/N-0).
View the data: playoff rate: winless vs unbeaten starts
| 0-N start | N-0 start | |
|---|---|---|
| After 1 | 25.3% | 53.3% |
| After 2 | 11.0% | 61.8% |
| After 3 | 1.6% | 72.9% |
| After 4 | 0.0% | 84.9% |
| After 5 | 0.0% | 90.2% |
| After 6 | 0.0% | 94.1% |
The main caveat belongs here. These groups shrink each week and the 0-3 count is tiny, so one or two teams can move the rate a long way. The field also grew to 14 teams in 2020, and 1 of 25 teams that started 0-3 made it since then, against 1 of 104 from 1999 to 2019. Recent bad starts are slightly more recoverable than the full-period figure suggests, but only slightly.
Branch CMost 0-3 teams finish with a losing record
Playoffs are only one outcome, so this chart shows where the regular season finished. Teams that started 0-3 ended with a losing record 87.6% of the time, exactly .500 in 7.0% of seasons and with a winning record just 5.4%. They averaged 4.9 wins, against 10.7 for teams that started 3-0.
The 3-0 group finished with a winning record 80.6% of the time and a losing record only 8.5%. The middle starts split more evenly: 2-1 teams finished above .500 in 63 per cent of seasons, while 1-2 teams finished below it 58.3% of the time.
Ties count as half a win.
View the data: where the season finishes, by start
| Losing record | Exactly .500 | Winning record | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-0 | 8.5% | 10.9% | 80.6% |
| 2-1 | 28.4% | 8.6% | 63.0% |
| 1-2 | 58.3% | 10.3% | 31.4% |
| 0-3 | 87.6% | 7.0% | 5.4% |
For season win totals and division prices, this is the chart I lean on. A strong preseason roster does not make an 0-3 team likely to recover, and the branches show it rarely does.
Branch DBad starts cover more often than unbeaten ones
This is where the market reacts to the early results. From game four onwards, 0-3 teams won only 37.3% of 1,696 games but covered 50.8%, while 3-0 teams won 58.7% of 1,698 games and covered just 48.2%. The 1-2 and 2-1 groups fall between them, at 50.7% and 49.7%.
None of these clears the 52.4% break-even at −110. Backing every 0-3 team blind returned −2.9%, and backing every 3-0 team returned −7.7%.
| Start | Games | Won | Covered | Spread return |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3-0 | 1,698 | 58.7% | 48.2% | −7.7% |
| 2-1 | 3,995 | 54.6% | 49.7% | −5.1% |
| 1-2 | 3,830 | 47.2% | 50.7% | −3.1% |
| 0-3 | 1,696 | 37.3% | 50.8% | −2.9% |
My read is that the number moves further than the teams do. Hot starts get priced like contenders and cold starts get priced like write-offs, and against the spread that adjustment slightly overshoots in both directions. It is not a system on its own. It is a reason to look harder at the matchup before laying points with an unbeaten side.
If this happens…
Only 2 of 129 teams that started 0-3 made the playoffs and none of 81 at 0-4 did, so a long price on a winless team is usually long for good reason.
3-0 teams covered only 48.2% of their remaining games for a −7.7% return, so ask whether the spread has outrun the tape before you lay points.
0-3 teams covered 50.8%, which is still below the 52.4% break-even, so a bad start only marks a spot worth studying. You still need the matchup to justify the bet.
Questions bettors ask

Not in this sample. 0 of 81 teams that started 0-4 between 1999 and 2025 reached the playoffs.
Do 0-3 NFL teams cover the spread for the rest of the season?
From game four onwards they covered 50.8% of 1,696 games, slightly more often than 3-0 teams at 48.2%. That is still under the 52.4% break-even at −110, and backing them blind returned −2.9%.
