NHL Goal in the First Two Minutes: What It Means for the Total
An NHL goal inside 2:00 pushes the over 5.5 rate from about a coin flip to roughly two in three. Here is how the total shifts, line by line, with fair prices.

If an NHL game has a goal inside the first two minutes, how often does it go over 5.5 or 6.5 goals, and how does that compare with later first goals?
- A67.4%over 5.5 after a goal inside 2:00
- B51.0%over 5.5 in all games
- C6.80average total after a goal inside 2:00
- D2,329games with a goal inside 2:00
A goal inside the first two minutes gets the whole arena talking about a shootout. I wanted to know whether the final totals back that up. Across 17,921 NHL regular-season games, 2,329 of them had a goal inside 2:00, which is 13.0% of the sample. That is a large enough group to measure properly.
The headline answer is yes. Those games went over 5.5 goals 67.4% of the time, against 51.0% across all games, and they averaged 6.80 goals against 5.89. This is real results data, not a model. It sits alongside the rest of my ice hockey betting predictions work, where I care more about how stable a pattern is than how loud it is. One warning first: once you know an early goal has gone in, the pre-game total can no longer be bet. Everything below is a comparison for live markets, not a reason to regret a price you can no longer take.
Branch AEvery over line jumps after a goal inside 2:00
This chart sets each over line for all games next to the same line for early-goal games. The gap is clear at every rung. Over 4.5 rises from 74.4% to 86.0%, over 6.5 from 40.1% to 55.8%, and over 7.5 from 20.9% to 32.9%.
The middle lines matter most to a bettor. Over 5.5 moves from a near coin flip to 67.4%, and the 95% range on that early-goal rate is only ±1.9 points. On a sample of 2,329 games, that is not a bounce.
95% range shown for the early-goal rate.

| All games | Goal inside 2:00 | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Over 3.5 | 83.0% | 92.5% | ±1.1 |
| Over 4.5 | 74.4% | 86.0% | ±1.4 |
| Over 5.5 | 51.0% | 67.4% | ±1.9 |
| Over 6.5 | 40.1% | 55.8% | ±2 |
| Over 7.5 | 20.9% | 32.9% | ±1.9 |
The main caveat belongs here. An early goal leaves almost the full sixty minutes for more scoring, so part of this gap is simply time on the clock, not momentum or open play. I also have no pre-game total in this data, so high-octane matchups sit alongside low-event grinds. Some early goals come from teams that were always likely to score heavily.
Branch BLater first goals drag totals sharply downward
Here each game is grouped by when the first goal arrived, and the final total is split into bands. When the opener came inside 2:00, 55.8% of games finished with 7 or more goals and only 14.0% with 4 or fewer. The 2:00-4:59 group looks very similar, with 53.2% reaching 7 or more.
The real slide starts later. Over 5.5 falls from 67.4% to 64.2%, then 58.9%, then 46.9% for an opener at 10:00-19:59. When nobody scores until the 2nd period, only 24.0% of games go over 5.5 and 48.4% finish with 4 or fewer goals.
*Includes 31 regular-season games that were 0-0 after overtime and settled in a shootout.

| 4 or fewer | 5 goals | 6 goals | 7 or more | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inside 2:00 (2,329) | 14.0% | 18.6% | 11.6% | 55.8% |
| 2:00-4:59 (3,500) | 14.5% | 21.3% | 11.0% | 53.2% |
| 5:00-9:59 (4,199) | 17.3% | 23.7% | 12.1% | 46.9% |
| 10:00-19:59 (4,582) | 26.6% | 26.5% | 11.8% | 35.1% |
| 2nd period (2,881) | 48.4% | 27.7% | 8.4% | 15.5% |
| 3rd period or later* (430) | 95.1% | 4.2% | 0.5% | 0.2% |
To me, the gradient matters more than the single early-goal figure. The scoring environment you are watching shows itself early, and a scoreless first period says a great deal about the goaltending and the structure on the ice that night.
Branch CAn early opener leaves nearly six goals still to come
This chart strips out the opening goal and counts only what followed. After a goal inside 2:00, an average of 5.80 further goals came, against 5.63 for 2:00-4:59 and 5.29 for 5:00-9:59. An opener at 10:00-19:59 was followed by 4.68, and a 2nd-period opener by 3.55.
This is the cleanest check on the time-remaining effect. The early bars sit close together, and the steep drop comes once the first period is mostly gone. So clock time explains a lot, but even within the first ten minutes an earlier opener still points to more scoring.

| Average further goals in the game, incl. OT/shootout credit | |
|---|---|
| Inside 2:00 | 5.8 goals |
| 2:00-4:59 | 5.63 goals |
| 5:00-9:59 | 5.29 goals |
| 10:00-19:59 | 4.68 goals |
| 2nd period | 3.55 goals |
One side note on the result: the team that scored inside 2:00 won in regulation 56.5% of the time and lost in regulation 23.0%. The overtime and shootout outcomes split almost evenly, at 10.4% and 10.2%. A fast start helps, but it decides nothing on its own.
Branch DFair prices for totals after a goal inside 2:00
This table turns the observed rates into fair odds with no margin. Over 5.5 is fair at 1.48 (−207), over 6.5 at 1.79 (−126), and over 7.5 at 3.04 (+204). On the other side, under 5.5 is fair at 3.07 and under 6.5 at 2.26.
These are the prices I compare with a live market once the early goal is in. If a live line on over 6.5 is longer than 1.79 after the bookmaker's margin, it deserves a look. If it is shorter, the market has already priced in the early goal and probably a bit more.
| Line | Over | Fair over | American | Under | Fair under |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Over 4.5 | 86.0% | 1.16 | −614 | 14.0% | 7.14 |
| Over 5.5 | 67.4% | 1.48 | −207 | 32.6% | 3.07 |
| Over 6.5 | 55.8% | 1.79 | −126 | 44.2% | 2.26 |
| Over 7.5 | 32.9% | 3.04 | +204 | 67.1% | 1.49 |
Remember that these figures blend every matchup together. A live price on a game between two defensive teams with hot goaltenders should sit below these baselines, and a clash between two leaky defences should sit above them.
If this happens…
After a goal inside 2:00, treat over 5.5 as roughly a 67.4% outcome rather than the 51.0% of all games. Do not judge the live price against a pre-game number you can no longer bet.
Compare the live over 6.5 with the fair 1.79 and the live over 5.5 with 1.48. Only take prices longer than these once the margin is included.
If the opener does not come until the 2nd period, only 24.0% of games went over 5.5. A goalless first period is a strong signal towards the under.
